Oral hygiene is in fact the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to help prevent bad breath and even dental problems and cleaning the tongue is one of necessary method in maintaining dental health.

Why we need teeth cleaning?
Teeth cleaning or teeth brushing is the elimination of unwanted tartar and dental plaque from teeth to prevent gum disease such as gingivitis and cavities. One-third of tooth loss by adult is due to severe gum diseases and even though how good our teeth are, it is useless if we are suffering from gum problems.
Dental professionals recommended that our teeth must be cleaned (by dental hygienist) at least every 6 months. This cleaning includes tooth polishing and tooth scaling, while debridement is necessary if too much tartar has built up then fluoride treatment follows.
To prevent tartar accumulation, good oral hygiene is very important between cleanings. We can do this by brushing our teeth frequently as well as using dental floss to prevent build-up of plaque on the teeth.
What is Plaque? Plaque is no other than a yellow sticky coating that build-up on the teeth and gums. What happen is that the bacteria in plaque release acid and that acid attacks tooth enamel. Repeated attacks can cause tooth decay. Plaque bacteria are usually cause by some food we eat.
Plaque is also the culprit of irritation to the gums and making them tender, red, or bleed easily. In several cases, the gums pull away from the teeth in several cases, leaving spaces inhabited by pus and bacteria.
How important is flossing? One of the most important aspects of oral hygiene is the use of dental floss, because it removes the decaying food remaining and plaque that stuck between the teeth. If this food decay and plaque are not removed properly it causes irritation to the gums, thus allowing the gum tissue to bleed more easily. Proper dental flossing is recommended at least once a day and preferably before bedtime. This way it helps prevent gum disease, receding gums, and cavities forming between the teeth.
The importance of tongue cleaning
Cleaning the tongue is essential part of daily oral hygiene, since it eliminates the whitish/yellowish coating of bacteria that cause bad breath, fungi, decaying food particles, and dead cells from the dorsal area of the tongue. Cleaning the tongue also helps protect the teeth because it also removes bacteria species which cause tooth decay and some gum problems.
